From the icy peaks of Kargil came a story of unmatched courage sacrifice and victory. Today India proudly remembers its brave heroes. India observed the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas by paying tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the nation in honouring the martyrs at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras Ladakh. He laid a wreath and paid his respects to the fallen heroes. Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth Northern Command Chief Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma and other senior Army officers also offered tributes. The ceremony became even more special as three Army helicopters flew in arrow formation and showered flower petals over the memorial. On Saturday evening the Army organised Shaurya Sandhya a special programme to honour the courage of Indian soldiers. Rajnath Singh also met the families of the martyrs and presented ceremonial urns as a mark of respect. The Indian Army is holding several events to mark the anniversary of Operation Vijay. During the 1999 Kargil War Indian soldiers fought in freezing temperatures steep mountains and heavy enemy fire. They successfully recaptured key strategic peaks including Tiger Hill Tololing and Batra Top forcing Pakistani intruders to retreat and securing a historic victory for India. Every year 26th July is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas to celebrate Indias victory and to remember the courage sacrifice and patriotism of the Indian Armed Forces.
