In Bhopal a strange and shocking scene was seen at Mahaveer Medical Institute and Hospital. More than two dozen Canara Bank officers left their regular office work and reached the hospital gate. They sat on a silent protest to recover a bank loan. This action has now created a big controversy. Why? Because Central Bank which is the lead bank in this loan has already started legal steps to recover money. The process of auction and ARC is going on. The last date of auction was 16th August. So if legal recovery is already happening why did Canara Bank officers need to sit on a dharna? When reporters asked the protesting officers about auction and ARC they could not give a clear answer. They also failed to show any record of such protest being done before at any other place. On the other hand the Medical College secretary Sunil Jain clearly said the institute is fully supporting the legal auction process. He called this protest illegal and meaningless. He asked “When the loan is being recovered legally why do officers need to protest in front of patients and students?” During the dharna hundreds of MBBS students were inside the college and many patients were in the hospital for treatment. Experts say such a protest at the main gate is not only unusual but also wrong because it disturbs medical services. Another big question is that Canara Bank did not inform the lead bank the Reserve Bank or even the ARC before this protest. Sources believe this unusual action could be due to personal interest or outside pressure. This was the second protest by Canara Bank officers at the same place within one week. The issue has now become a topic of discussion all over the country.
